The Marquis de Sade - Singular Rebel or Hero of Reference?

 

    2015, at 51 years, with the intention to have read a large part at least of the European classic literature before my death, I have finally dared to read the Marquis de Sade. Since 25 more than 30 years the name Justine accompanies me, without knowing the figure. Justine, that was for me the symbol of submission. The great ultimate heroine sadic, without knowing her story. Indeed, I have made a false imagination of her, as I noticed when reading 'Justine or The Misfortunes of Virtue'. I have confused her with the one of 'The 120 Days of Sodom, or the School of Libertinage'. Good or bad, I have started my late reading, too long hesitated, with the novel 'Aline et Valcour'. Great deception, despite of the interesting short philosophic passages. I was rather bored than excited. That, that is the Marquis de Sade? That could not be!

    Then I have found the 'Justine' in the library of Béziers. Yeah, that sounds like de Sade. 'The 120 Days of Sodom' were not available, fortunately. So I have begun to read 'Justine or The Misfortunes of Virtue'. What a discovery, what a surprise was the philosopher and the poet de Sade. What a sublime language, from time to time. I have swallowed the novel, although the descriptions of sexual practices were rather boring and frustrating for me. I have continued and continued to read with attention, attraction and interest, even if the repetition of the eternal and natural law of the strongest has already begun to bore me. Finished, one day, 'Justine' was finished. I still had to read the monster 'The 120 Days of Sodom'. That's heavy, I knew it. But knowing this oeuvre is part of my personal voluntary general education. So then, throw yourself into debauchery, Simone, I said to me. After 'Justine', 'The 120 Days of Sodom', were vapid, disgusting and above all boring.

    After reading 'Justine' of the Marquis de Sade, I have proclaimed: … … ...
